Solomon has been experimenting with all sorts of pursuits and pleasures in search of meaning and purpose amidst the futility he has found “under the sun”. Now, for the first time, he addresses life on the vertical plane, in terms of how we relate to God. The danger and foolishness of religious piety is that it gives us the illusion of being able to manipulate and control God. It downplays both the holiness of God and the depth of our sin, inoculating us to the Gospel; the fear of God points us to our desperate need for the Gospel.

Ecclesiastes 5:7: For in many dreams and in many words there is emptiness. Rather, fear God.
