Paul depicts very vividly what life was like for the pious Jew living under the Mosaic Law. Without the freedom from sin and the Law that only Christ could bring, life was brutal. One would agree with the Law but never have the power to live according to it’s standard. That left a person never being able to do what was right and stuck always doing what was wrong. But Christ came to free us from this bondage and usher in life empowered by the Spirit. Only in the gospel do we have hope from the bondage described at the end of Romans 7.
